She also trained at the Neuropschology Department of John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek, CA, a level I Trauma Center, where she worked with patients hospitalized for traumatic brain injuries. She transitioned back to her native East Coast for her formal internship at Lenox Hill Hospital, NYC. At Lenox Hill, she received intensive training in various therapeutic modalities for children and adults. Following her internship year, Dr. Nelson completed Postdoctoral work in a pediatric neurobehavioral disorders clinic at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, Bronx, NY, and provided neuropsychological assessments of children with suspected learning disabilities at SUNY Optometric LDU, NYC.

From there, Dr. Nelson joined the Pediatric Psychiatry Department at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, NYC. As a clinician, she provided direct services to children at the hospital and in a school setting, as well as consultation to local school leadership and staff. Dr. Nelson became the Senior Clinical Supervisor of the department's School Based Mental Health Program (SBMH) that made services available to underserved individuals in the surrounding communities. She supervised and taught psychology interns, externs, and psychiatry residents, as an Assistant Professor at Columbia.
